This month Ben and I read Scythe by Neal Shusterman. We did a quick Instagram Story introducing the book with a brief PSA to the theme. Ben and I have read several books together over the past year and a half with this being the first one I thought might be a bit mature for him. Please do your homework when selecting books to read with your child. I started this book before Ben and while i think he is mature enough for the content he gets to decide if he doesn’t finish.

My thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. It took about two thirds of the way through before I stopped making faces when they described the killings. I purposely didn’t read reviews because I wanted to learn the details on my own. A world with no war, no disease and no hunger. Basically humans were immortal, of course that means in order to keep the population down a group of individuals called scythes were in charge of killing people. It sounds bad and at times it is but there is hope. Two young apprentices are chosen and then their paths go separate ways. I listened to the audio book through Audible (typically I listen from the library) and I thought the narrator (Greg Temblay) was excellent. I will definitely be reading book 2 Thunderhead.
